Abstract
To enhance fruit-setting and to produce seedless fruit in watermelon under greenhouse condition, forchlorfenuron liquid (1-(2-Chlor-4-pyridyl)3-phenylurea) was tested from 1989 to 1992.
Fifty or 100 ppm was effective in inducing parthenocarpy when applied onto the whole surface of fruit at flowering time. Fruitset was above 95% by the forchlorfenuron application, compared to about 70% by the hand pollination. Parthenocarpic fruits did not have ripe seed, but have a few black and a number of white seed coats. Average fruit weight, sugar content and flesh thickness of watermelon were not significantly different between parthenocarpic and fertilized fruit.
